Watch the week: NOMOS Tangente 38 Limited Edition

Hours They are usually evaluated based on their performance and aesthetics, but what about their ability to help those in need? The new limited edition NOMOS Tangente 38 ranks high in this category as well. Produced by the German watchmaker Nomos glass works, Tangente 38 50 Ans Médecins Sans Frontières celebrates its fiftieth anniversary Doctors without borders (MSF), and part of every sale supports MSF’s life-saving work around the world.

It was Doctors Without Borders Founded in Paris In 1971 by a group of French doctors who saw an urgent need for medical help in developing countries around the world. While it started as a group of doctors and 300 volunteers, it has since grown into a prominent aid organization with over 30,000 employees. Since 1980, MSF has treated more than a hundred million patients and responded to urgent humanitarian disasters around the world, from earthquakes to famines and more. It also helps with more routines, such as vaccination efforts, in places that lack adequate health care.

While the overall aesthetic is subtle, the new Tangente 38 includes many unique design details that honor five decades of the organization’s work. The bright red “12” color on the dial helps the watch stand out from similar watches in the NOMOS range, and also indicates the red MSF logo. The simple black and white dial has the words “50 ans de Médecins Sans Frontières” engraved along the bottom, near the position of 6 o’clock, and the same phrase is also engraved on the back of the case.

Apart from that, the watch comes with an elegant brushed stainless steel 37.5mm case, separate chronograph dial at 6 o’clock, and a muted gray fabric strap. The hand-wound Alpha movement moves away under the smooth exterior, and offers a 43-hour power reserve.

It’s easy to overdo it with a lot of exterior detailing, especially for a limited-edition watch like this one, but we appreciate that Nomos kept things simple. The pop of color on the top of the dial and the small engravings make it clear that this is Tangente 38 special, yet it allows the clean and simple beauty to shine through. It celebrates great organization without making an advertisement appear on your wrist.

It’s also highly collectible: NOMOS 2021 will only manufacture models, in reference to the watch’s year of release. And if you decide to buy one, your purchase will support MSF’s vital healthcare projects around the world. According to NOMOS, 100 euros (about $ 121) of each sale will be donated directly to the organization.
