Most of the time, it changes to The open air It comes in slow, gradual steps: waterproof and slightly more breathable fabric, the sole of a heavy duty shoe, and a lighter or more compressible sleeping bag. But the new tent line from the sea to the summit – very light Alto One person And the two persons, And semi-light Telos two persons And the three persons– It represents a respectable leap in performance and design that will make outdoor life more enjoyable and comfortable for tent dwellers.
The designers have addressed and overcome three major sticking points for what can make sheltering in tents an annoyance. The first is space: No one wants to be trapped in a narrow, low space tent. The second is the ventilation: every tent resident woke up to dripping roofs and damp equipment, knowing that there was no rain overnight. And the third is versatility: The shelter where you’ll spend the right amount of time should be fun and eye-catching patterns to make the space fun.
Sea to Summit has faced all of these challenges in this new streak, its first foray into the tent industry, and has expanded well and improved what everyone else was doing in the tent game. I recently tested Telos TR2 on a albacore tuna fishing expedition along the North Carolina coast.
What is that
Sea to Summit is known for manufacturing a wide range of silicones Dry bags Combined with great tools and equipment, it recently expanded its outdoor sleeping area with its line of quality sleeping bags and pillows. In order to get his inaugural push into the backcountry shelter space, the team reached out to Jake Lah – the brains behind Daqian, Makers of light and strong tent poles – and they spent millions of dollars in research and development and it took more than three years to develop the new range of tents Alto and Telos. After months of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, they finally reached the market.

One of the major design factors that make this line of tents special and unique among the shelters now in existence is Tension Ridge. Not unlike many new tent designs, a short pole bisects the top of the tent and is mounted on both sides to support the side walls and create a bit more headroom. But the Sea To Summit edition takes that concept and dramatically improves it by making the poles taller and arc-clear. This angle amplifies the benefits of Tension Ridge: more ventilation, more headroom, and more vertical sidewalls to increase interior space.
Why do we love it
Packed with innovative and well-thought-out features, Sea To Summit’s new range of tents is a solid entry into a busy market. The equipment and staple fabrics of the tents are made of high-quality materials that combine in smart and useful ways. Even the tent bag itself is cleverly re-thinking – it includes three main bags, one for the canvas, one for the tent, and one for the pillars. The three bags can be attached as one through aluminum straps and hooks, or they can be quickly split into separate units for easy distribution to distribute the gear load with backpack mates, for example. You can also attach two bags inside the tent for extra storage out of the way (smelly Stockings It was my play).

Another great feature is the ability to set up and lower your indoor tent while in flight, which is made possible thanks to the quick coupling feet that insert the key into the poles. This is especially useful on windy or rainy days when trying to pitch or remove your tent while trying to keep it dry.
Lightbar is another great touch. It’s simply a long rectangular piece of opaque white plastic that has a curvature in the center, which you can fit into a triangular pole bag after the Telos have been pitched. Add Headlamp Or any other light source, attach it with two tension points at the top of the tent, and you have your own wide diffused light for any activities inside the tent.
Other benefits include the ability to roll either end of the tarp to meet in the middle of the top of the tent, and secure it along the Tension Ridge. This gives you a quick and easy way to spread the fly if Bad weather Roll over, while still being able to enjoy the cool night breezes and views of the starry sky. Other tent manufacturers have this feature as well, but the Sea To Summit version allows you to do this without stepping out of the tent, due to its tall door zippers and easy-to-operate Quick Connect / fly points.

And the last killer feature is what they call Hangout mode. This requires the shared ability to use tarp only as a stand-alone shelter and bump into it by letting you tilt the fly back or add upright tent poles or Trekking poles (Or sticks) to the front edge of the tent to create a spacious shelter that you can stroll underneath or relax comfortably in some camp chairs.
But far from all the cool design tweaks and tricks, the main draw is the Tension Ridge, which, as advertised, offers plenty of room interior along with increased airflow. This ventilation inside the tent significantly reduces moisture build-up during the night, but eliminates the dreaded early morning drops.
Nitpick
After sleeping in TR2 for a few nights in my backyard and spending two nights on the beach, I found little or no faults in the tent. Everything was exquisitely designed and made living in a tent more fun than usual, especially for someone older like me. Navigating indoors was easy, without any of the claustrophobia or lift I used in the lower domed tents, and all the nice materials and smart touches made living in the tent fun.
The only aloe vera I can think of can be seen in a long-term test where wear and damage can be better measured. The material is top notch, but it is very lightweight so violent use over months may present vulnerabilities. As the high winds continued ashore, my TR2 tester (admittedly a prototype) ended up with two slightly curved poles near the top of the aft. Whether it was a design flaw or just the result of prolonged wind pressure that would damage most tent poles, it remains to be seen.
