Radiation Oncology Center with the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare System

The new Radiation Oncology Center of the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare System has completed the first phase of the Brian De Gillison Cancer Institute. In support of the Cancer Institute’s vision of providing a comprehensive chain of care, the new Oncology Center in Sarasota, Florida is providing patients with access to first-line radiation therapy, including external radiation services, in a comfortable, spa-like environment dedicated solely to cancer care.

The 18,000-square-foot facility is equipped with two linear accelerators from Varian TrueBeam that accurately identify tumors, sparing healthy cells from unnecessary radiation. Ultimately this cutting edge technology facilitates faster treatments, shorter recovery times and improved results. The center also includes a CT simulator for radiation therapy, six examination rooms, offices for doctors, and an integrative care suite.

The facility, through critical feedback from hospital user groups and community members, has been planned to focus on the entire patient by integrating advanced technology with wellness elements such as the Garden of Serenity and the suite of supportive services. Filled with an abundance of natural light, thoughtful artwork and natural materials, the center is designed to offer a soothing care experience, from the moment a patient walks in the door to the moment they complete the ultimate treatment – a welcome alternative to traditional oncology centers.

Patients, families, and staff are also provided with the opportunity to have physical access to the outdoors. At the end of the lobby space there are direct views of the ceremonial water feature with a natural wooded area behind as a backdrop. The patio surrounding the water feature allows those visiting the place a place to rest and contemplate.
